From Ocean to Everyday: Handmade Bags with a Second Life
Share
At GP Sails, sails don’t always retire — sometimes, they get a second adventure.
When we find ourselves with excess sailcloth, offcuts, or old sails that have crossed oceans and weathered countless miles, Lyndsay gives them a brand-new purpose. Instead of going to waste, these materials are carefully transformed into handmade kit bags and duffle bags — each one completely unique, and each one carrying a story from the sea.
Not Just a Bag — A Piece of Sailing History
Every sail tells a story. Some have powered boats through club races, others have cruised coastlines or crossed open water. The fabric may show subtle signs of its previous life — stitch lines, sail numbers, or panels from different builds — and that’s exactly what makes these bags special.
No two bags are ever the same.
You’re not just buying a bag — you’re carrying a piece of real sailing heritage.
Designed for Real Life (Not Just the Deck)
Sailcloth is built for one of the toughest environments on the planet: the ocean. That means these bags are:
- Durable – Made from material designed to handle wind, salt, and sun
- Lightweight – Strong without the bulk
- Weather-resistant – Perfect for wet kit, gym gear, or weekend trips
- Whether you’re heading to the marina, the gym, a regatta, or a spontaneous weekend away, these bags are made to be used — and used hard.
Handmade by Lyndsay
Each bag is individually made by Lyndsay when the right materials become available. This isn’t mass production — it’s small-batch, hands-on craftsmanship.
She carefully selects usable sail panels and leftover materials, designing each bag around the shapes, colours, and features already in the cloth. Zips, straps, and reinforcements are chosen to match the toughness of the original sail, so the finished bag is just as practical as it is eye-catching.
Because they’re made from what’s available at the time, stock is always limited — and once a design is gone, it’s gone for good.

Sustainability That Makes Sense
Upcycling sailcloth is about more than just aesthetics.
Modern sails are made from highly technical materials that are built to last — which also makes them difficult to dispose of responsibly. By repurposing old sails and surplus cloth into bags, we:
- Reduce waste
- Extend the life of high-performance materials
- Create something useful instead of throwing it away
It’s a small but meaningful way to give back to the oceans that give us so much.
Functional. Sustainable. Completely One-of-a-Kind.
These handmade sail bags are perfect for:
- Sailing gear
- Gym kit
- Weekend travel
- Beach days
- Gifts for sailors and ocean lovers
And because every bag is different, you’ll never turn up somewhere with the same one as someone else.
Keep an eye on our shop and social channels — Lyndsay only makes these bags when the right sails and materials come in, so availability changes throughout the year.
When you see one you love, grab it.
It might just be the only one like it in the world. 🌊⛵
